From The Mayor

Firstly I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year, but what a start to 2010, the snow and ice has caused so many problems, and I would like to thank the many carers who have gone out of their way to visit the elderly, even if they have not been their clients. The carers who have visited my dad, have always had a cheery smile and a kind word, even though they might have slipped many times and struggled driving to and fro, Your visits have meant so much to all of them; thank You All. Now I would like to mention two very special events that happened on the 12 December. The first a fund raising coffee morning at the Town Hall, organised and run by The Young Titans, they did an excellent job; they ran a draw, table top stalls and made a lovely hot cup of tea or coffee, most of these youngsters belong to the Streetz dance crew, and as soon as Amy put her music on, were going through their dance routine's while trying to get people to part with as much money as they could. You all did a fantastic job, and my sincere thanks go to all the youngsters, Amy Sears and her adult members, and Anne Tattersall for raising well over £400. We hear so much bad press about youngsters today, but we in Great Torrington are lucky to have so many caring and helpful youngsters, you are a credit to Great Torrington. The 2nd event was a charity dinner and cabaret evening at the Methodist Church. We were entertained by the fantastic Ashley and Jess Withey, along with dad Len, and some other excellent local singers and guitar players, all under the watchful eye of Jan Withey. We all enjoyed a fantastic meal, and I would like to thank those who prepared it, and the wonderful helpers who served us. The money raised, I believe, is to go towards repair work on the front of the church, I sincerely wish you well with the fund raising, and thank you all for a wonderful evening.
The"Big Sing" drew the crowds on the 16 December; so many fine voices, singing the carols, getting us all in the mood for Christmas. The evening was hosted by Rev Dave Eadie and Rev Graham Slingo, along with the Torrington Silver Band, the ladies choir, Emma, and also the fantastic children and the readers, who all made this a special evening, and not forgetting the Nick and the backstage helpers, The red cross and St John Ambulance volunteers, I sincerely thank everyone. I am delighted to report that the grand sum of £395.00 was raised towards my Mayor's charities, The Family Project and Great Torrington St John Ambulance.
Now just to finish I must mention, the special Christmas Day Keeley and I enjoyed, visiting Woodland Vale, The Cottage Hospital, Castle Hill Nursing Home, and Hatchmoor Nursing Home. We enjoyed chatting to so many people; it truly was a special day for both of us. Thank you all for your kind hospitality. And on New Year's Eve it was our pleasure to visit two lovely people at Hatchmoor Nursing home, who both were celebrating their 90th birthdays, Mrs Gwen Found, and Mr Eddie Edwards; I wish them, and all of you a very happy, healthy and peaceful 2010.
Please remember if you want my help or want me to visit or attend any event, please ring either our secretary Mrs Pauline Baker on 01805 626135 or my home no 01805 622779.
Best Wishes
Sue Mills
