Great
Torrington Horticultural Society
It's thawing at last!
I will be able to stop my regular patrol relieving the camellias of the
weight of snow. Under the hedge daffodil spikes are already showing, and
along the bank the snowdrops will soon be in flower. The garden is darker
now that the snow has cleared but suddenly the air is filled with sound
from the birds. They are still clustering round the feeders but in the
snow it was a silent earnest affair, at last they can afford the energy
to chirrup and pink.
Over New Year some friends from London were singing the praises of their
urban garden; we even have the occasional chaffinch, they exalted. It
made me realise how blessed we are round here; thrushes, goldfinches,
marsh tits, the occasional bullfinch in the garden. Up the lane there
are lapwings and starlings; larks, and yellowhammers in the summer. Duck
as the sparrow hawk patrols the banks. We must guard jealously these natural
riches.
