In
the run-up to Remembrance Day, Year 9 learn about World War 1 and write
poems and stories. Some of you may have purchased our book of war poetry
sold in aid of St Dunstan's charity for blinded ex-servicemen. Here is
a of poem from the book and a story.
Brave Heart
The blistering flames
make my face cringe
As bombs and shells,
Make my brave heart break.
Before my very own
eyes bodies lie still
A river of blood honourably can spill
My family and friends appear smiling
I'm down in my trench waiting to go over
My turn next I don't know what to do
It's time now to go over the top, rifle in hand
Running towards No Man's Land
My legs like jelly I fall to the ground
A gun fire shakes me and like a rocket hits me
Hard my leg shakes out of control
I taste ash on my tongue
Breathe slow breathe slow soldier,
I heard faintly and passed out
I awake in horror
I could not speak
For always I will respect that day.
