TORRINGTON IN BLOOM

At last, we have some results for you! Firstly, that for the Britain in Bloom entry for which the town of Great Torrington was awarded a Silver Gilt medal, our fifth in a row. This, despite the fact that the judges were critical of the state of some of the paths and gutters (weeds growing) and the poor condition of the planting in Rack Park (the judges suggested that the rose beds need replacing and replanting and there were brambles growing in amongst the shrubs). The judges were impressed with the Secret Garden and our thanks to Mickey Gullick, for all his efforts over many years, for transforming this little garden into an absolute gem.
Next year, the Town Council has confirmed that it will back an entry into the Britain in Bloom competition and the Torrington in Bloom Association is currently engaged in working out a strategy, in cahoots with the Town Council, to ensure that back-up and support. Watch this space!
Now, as for the 'local competition', Torrington in Bloom, a presentation ceremony was held at RHS Rosemoor on the Thursday, 8 October, attended by our lady Mayoress - Sue Mills ably assisted by her Consort Keeley - who presented the awards and the raffle prizes. A raffle was held to help raise funds and over £80 was raised, and our thanks to all those who supported the same. The ceremony was well attended and competition was fierce with some previous gold medallists slipping back (will do better next year!) and some new faces winning their first awards. Judging was very tight and some people only just missed 'gold' by one or two points.
The Torrington in Bloom Association would like to thank all those people who made their gardens, frontages or windowsills look so attractive, both for the Britain in Bloom and Torrington in Bloom competitions. Thanks also to RHS Rosemoor for kindly allowing the presentation ceremony to take place on their premises and for supplying a judge for the Torrington in Bloom competition. The association would also like to thank those of you who donated prizes, food and drink (in particular, the delicious cake).
