Torrington 1646
Back in April, as part of the St Georges day celebrations
we launched our "friends of Torrington 1646".
For the last seven years the experience has been financially self sufficient
with no core funding. By continuously modifying the experience we bring
history to life in ever more interesting, (and let's face it, gory), ways.
With the ever present and absolutely vital support of our many volunteers,
we have now reached our tenth anniversary.
The friends of Torrington 1646 exist to help support the core costs of
the experience. We believe that what we do is really important not only
to the wonderful town of Great Torrington, but for the provision of informative
and fun education for children of all ages throughout the South West.
If you are interested in joining our friends please come and see us or
call Master Jake on 01805 626146.
And now for a little topical comment:
The date: 20 April 1653
The event: Dissolution of the Long Parliament by Oliver Cromwell given
to the House of Commons
"It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place,
which you have dishonoured by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled
by your practice of every vice; ye are a factious crew, and enemies to
all good government; ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like
Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your
God for a few pieces of money.
Maybe we should bring him back again?
