The Sandman

Out of the large monstrous door he is pushed. Frozen there in the deep silence of his imagination. Only a small candle in his trembling hand, there to protect the boy from the monsters he is always told about. Standing in front of him are cascades of terrifying stairs, which appear to go on forever.
Slowly he trails through the blankets of darkness and reaches the first of many spine-chilling steps, as he places his quivering foot on the stair a loud squeaky sound fills the room… He quickly turns his head and fiercely runs up many more until again he scans the area. A huge shadow dashes across the dimly lit wall. Fearfully he gradually moves on. Noises quiver around the tension-filled air surrounding the panicked boy. Suddenly the boy comes to a halt, this step is creating an extremely falsetto noise, he taps his foot on the unsteady stair a few times and soon realises it is safe and once again, moves on.
Now he can finally see the dusky end of his fearsome journey to the safety of his bed. The last few steps of fright are almost over but seem to be endless. The Sandman still has his chance to attack the figure of fright. The voices of the monsters speak again. A chill slithers down the defenceless child's spine as he is frozen on the spot. His face is pasty and still. He takes a few deep breaths and runs up the last couple of steps. He feels relieved about finishing his voyage until he tilts his head to find a landing awaiting his footsteps. Instead of slowly sneaking along the dark, cracked floorboards he decides to sprint so the trip can finally be over. He reaches the massive crooked door and turns the cold black doorknob to safety.
Amber Piper, Year 7

Aaron has just finished his GCSEs and left school, but before he starts North Devon College I feel I'm still within my rights to use his poems. You've seen one of his before, but they are so good that I thought you'd like to see two more. Look out for his name in the future - a poet in the making.
