Great Torrington
Horticultural Society
It's about now that you can feel the benefit
of all that hard work particularly in the veg. garden. Salads of all kinds,
baby carrots and new potatoes taste so wonderful, plot to pot in minutes.
The weeds are another story; they too are bursting out all over. Mulching
can be a solution with the added benefit of holding in moisture (and we
have been promised a hot summer!!) Grass clippings, composted bark chippings,
even gravel will all do in the right setting. They will not smother perennial
weeds but may give you a much needed breather. For maximum effectiveness
the layer needs to be at least 8cm (3in) deep. And don't forget to Grow
for Our Show: Saturday 15th August.
Thinking of summer, we have our annual coach outing arranged for Saturday
20th June to Abbotsbury Tropical gardens near Weymouth. The coach leaves
Torrington at 9am and non members are welcome to join us. Ring Kath Cleave
on 01805 622094 for more information.
