Abbeyfield House, Glen Tor, Villa Road, Great Torrington On the 27th May 2008 the new extension to the Abbeyfield House was opened by Richard Carr-Gomm, the founder of the Abbeyfield movement. The improvements were funded by a donation of £250,000 from the Dick & Mary Sanders Trust. The house is part of the Abbeyfield South West Society which operates 6 houses in Devon and Cornwall. The Abbeyfield Society is one of the largest voluntary sector providers of housing and care for older people in the United Kingdom. The movement has over 650 supported sheltered houses and 80 care homes providing accommodation for 7,500 residents and involving 5,000 volunteers. It was founded in 1956 to help relieve loneliness and isolation amongst older people.There are Abbeyfield Societies in 13 other countries across the world. Abbeyfield Glen Tor is directed by a volunteer House committee, which is chaired by Mrs Vivienne Sheriff, and is managed by the Housekeeper, Jackie Hughes, with three other staff. It provides housing for ten residents, who each have their own private room with ensuite bathroom. The Housekeepers provide luncheon and tea in the dining room and each resident prepares their own breakfast using the kitchenette facilities in their room.
