Dreams and Teams
Thanks to a British Council sponsored project
called "Dreams and Teams". Great Torrington Community School
is building links with a community near Gondar in Ethiopia. Hopefully,
this will lead to a meaningful cultural link between Torrington and
Gondar, which has a castle dating from around 1646.
It is hoped, that parties of Torrington pupils will start to visit Ethiopia
within the next two years. Any pupil lucky enough to go on such a trip
will have an incredibly important cultural and life changing experience.
They will certainly see "how the other half live" and will
realize just how lucky they are and how basic things that we take for
granted are treasured in other cultures.
Ethiopia has a very rich cultural history and any future visits must
include exposure to this history as well as to the present day school
and its pupils. So this was the purpose of our first visit, to explore
a possible itinerary for such a visit and over the next few months,
head teacher's husband Jay Nicholson will tell the story of a preparatory
trip to Ethiopia made this March with visits to Addis Ababa, Lake Tana,
Gondar, Azezo School, Axum and Lalibela.
